Robert A. Winn Scholarship Recipients 2016
This year’s recipients of the Robert A. Winn Memorial scholarship are C. J. Alesandrini, Megan Wheatley, and Michele Winn. The scholarships are awarded annually to applicants who are accepted and registered as full time students in an accredited college, university, or vocational school. All applicants must be either active or life members of Verdoy or immediate family of the Department or Association members.
C. J. Alesandrini graduated from Colonie Central High School. He is the grandson of Verdoy member, Tom Alesandrini. While at Hartwick College he will be focusing on getting an accounting degree which he plans to use in the business world along with a certificate in education. Once an accountant he has long range plans to be able to teach business subjects at the High School or College Level. He will be a member of the college lacrosse team.
Megan Wheatley is a graduate of Shaker High School. She is the daughter of Past Chief Jason and Auxiliary member Karin Wheatley. Megan is a member of the Verdoy Auxiliary. She will be attending Hudson Valley Community College in the fall majoring in nursing with a minor in disabilities studies. She has worked with youngsters with disabilities since fifth grade. While she watched the care her father received during his various hospital stays, she became aware of the roll the nurses play as they care for their patients. Their attitude sets the tone for the patient’s days and for the family members as well. Her dream is “to be the nurse that determines that the day will be a good one for their patients and families, just as many have done for her family.”
Michele Winn graduated from Shaker High School. She is the granddaughter of Past Chief and Past Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioner, Robert A. Winn and present Commissioner Patricia Winn. In the fall, she will be attending Clarkson University, majoring in chemical engineering with a pre-dental advisement. Her ultimate goal is to be an orthodontist and by taking chemical engineering she will receive all the necessary classes to go further on into dentistry. Michele will be playing soft ball team with the university’s soft ball team.
