What is a fire commissioner?
A commissioner’s primary function is to ensure that the Verdoy Fire District is effectively supplying firefighting services to our residents and making certain that we supply the necessary equipment in which to do so. We thoughtfully do this while protecting the interests and finances of the community in which we represent.
Who can become a fire commissioner?
The only prerequisite to become a fire commissioner is to be a district resident. If you read the biographies of our current commissioners you will find varying degrees of talents, fire service knowledge and backgrounds. Our commissioners are elected on a 5 year rotation with 5 year terms. We work without salary.
How are District tax dollars used?
We start in August/September planning what funds are needed for the following year. We include basic needs, such as utilities and insurance payments; replacement equipment needs such as air packs, hose and gear; smaller vehicle replacement such as utility vehicles and chief cars; vehicle maintenance and repairs including apparatus and the rescue boat; and building maintenance and repairs. The budget that we submit to the town does not determine your tax payment. We work within the allocated funds already set for us. We welcome and encourage residents to attend our budget hearing this October.
How can I find out more information?
We hold meetings on the second from the last Thursday of each month starting at 7 pm. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. In our agenda we set a time for a public forum to address concerns and answer questions.
